Black History Month is a time for celebration, pride and reflection. It can also bring a quiet heaviness. I say that not just as a therapist, but as a Black-British therapist. I know how this month can stir complex emotions: pride in our history, yes, but also tiredness. The exhaustion of navigating systems not built for us. The sting of casual racism that goes unnamed. The weight of always being “resilient.”
So, if you’re not feeling joyful right now, that’s okay. You don’t need to perform celebration.
You’re allowed to feel joy. You’re allowed to feel tired. You’re allowed to rest. All of that belongs.
Taking care of our mental health isn’t just something we do in a crisis, it’s a way of reclaiming space, choice, breath.
And for many of us, that is part of our heritage too: quiet strength, collective care, inner survival.
This month, I hope you find what you need. Rest. Connection. Laughter. Permission to pause. Whatever you’re carrying, may you know: you matter, you’re seen, and your wellbeing is worth protecting.
Happy Black History Month.
If you'd like a space where you don’t have to explain yourself, but just be yourself, I offer that.
